Gabrieleno Indian/Tongva Land

One of the last remaining natural wetlands in California

UPDATE: March 26, 2010

About

The Ballona Wetlands Ecosystem is the last large coastal wetlands ecosystem in Los Angeles County.

California has lost over 95% of its wetlands and Los Angeles County has lost 98%. Some of the ecosystem has been destroyed by Playa Vista’s Phase One development.

Already, we are seeing significant impacts to birds and animals as a result of Playa Vista’s destruction of approximately 200 acres of this ecosystem. Any further loss of acreage at Ballona will impair our ability to provide long-term, sustainable habitat for birds and animals and also provide open space and recreation for people to enjoy. —From http://www.ballona.org/about/the-development/

Friday the L.A. City Council approved the Phase 2 development of Playa Vista. There are many issues with the Phase 1 development of the project that are still not resolved -

  1. 1)The protection and preservation of the natural wetlands and animal/bird life

  2. 2)The handling and re-burial of Native Gabrieleno/Tongva Indian remains

  3. 3)Safety issues with the methane gas stored in the land
